Ānurūpye Śūnyamanyat - “If one is in proportion, the other is zero.”
Solve simultaneous linear equations
What does it mean?
This Vedic Mathematics sutra applies when solving simultaneous linear equations of the form: a_1x+b_1y=c_1 a_2x+b_2y=c_2 If the coefficients of one variable (say, y) and the constants are in the same ratio, then the other variable (here, x) is zero.
The Method
- Given 2 linear equations
- 3x+7y=2 4x+21y=6
- - Coefficients of y: 7:21=1:3
- Constants: 2:6=1:3
- Since both are in the same ratio, by the sutra, the other variable x=0.
- Now substitute x=0 into either equation:7y=2 => y=\frac{2}{7}
- Solution: x=0,y=\frac{2}{7}
Why it matters
This sutra is a pattern recognition shortcut. It saves time by spotting proportional relationships and eliminating one variable instantly, turning a two-variable problem into a one-step solution.
