Nikhilam Navatascaramam Dasatah - “All from 9 and the last from 10”
Fast subtraction and multiplication
What does it mean?
This Vedic Mathematics sutra simplifies multiplication and subtraction by using complements. It’s especially powerful when numbers are close to powers of 10 (like 10, 100, 1000).
The Method
- Choose a base (like 100)
- Find how much each number is below the base
- Cross-subtract to get the left part
- Multiply the differences for the right part
- Combine both parts for the final answer
Example: 97 × 96
Base = 100
97 is –3, 96 is –4
Left part: 97 – 4 = 93
Right part: 3 × 4 = 12
✅ Final Answer: 9312
Why it matters
